Darren Aronofsky’s "The Wrestler"
March 11, 2008Like I said in the first ever Weekend Roundup, we try to relay film news which may have flown over your head, and we do particularize the ones that are currently in production. And I think that with every bit of awesome news that we have on this film so far, it deserves an article on its own. Besides, it covers something that I’m very familiar with (pro wrestling), as opposed to the other material I was working on (the very technical subject of film audio) before I decided to go forward with this one. Anyway, you can point and laugh at me later this week, when I make a fool out of myself and put that audio-related post up.
But today I’m going to geek out on the upcoming film The Wrestler, starring Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei, with Darren Aronofsky (Requiem For A Dream, The Fountain) at the helm. And in the vast yard that is pro wrestling, I, sir/ma’am, am the Big Dog! And you are the inanimate grass gnome. Or the friendly, little kitty. Maybe even the miniscule-yet-hardworking ant.
But it doesn’t matter, because I am the Big Dog! And I can easily destroy/eat/poop on you whenever damn well I please!

Anyway, onto The Wrestler.

The film appears to be Aronofsky’s first foray outside of Planet Mindfuck, which he began to lord over with the release of his major motion picture directorial debut, Pi, back in 1998. In The Wrestler, Mickey Rourke (9 ½ Weeks, Sin City) plays Randy “The Ram” Robinson, a successful pro wrestler in the 1970s & 80s whose career is cut short by an in-ring heart attack, and who has now resorted to working at a deli while finding himself in a romantic relationship with a co-worker/stripper played by Marisa Tomei.
SOLD! right? But wait, there’s more! An aging Robinson has chanced upon the opportunity to step back into the ring and re-ignite a feud with his old nemesis, The Ayatollah. But in pursuing a career revival, Robinson would be risking his very life, after being warned by a doctor that performing anything that would inflict any physical strain (that includes wrestling, duh) could lead to his death, considering that THE MAN SUFFERED A FREAKING HEART ATTACK IN THE RING BEFORE.
But obviously, our hero will put it all on the line as he decides to barrel onto the independent hardcore circuit to prove himself worthy of once again facing The Ayatollah. After all, the man that advised him to give it all up IS ONLY A FREAKING DOCTOR, WHAT DOES HE KNOW RIGHT?
So there’s your plot. /Film has a review of an early draft of the script right here. What worries me though is that even though the film looks very well-researched, its other characters are obviously plays on famous wrestlers. For example, Robinson’s best friend in the film is a guy named “Lex Lethal,” and there’s also a character named “Booker D.”
Really? No “Bulk Bogan” or “Bret Fart?” Maybe even a “Schmris Schmericho?” I’m sure that Luger and Booker would appreciate the tributes, but I’m also sure that even they would prefer more subtle, wink-like ones, as opposed to these blatant and bordering on too-campy-even-for-wrestling nods.

The film co-stars Evan Rachel Wood (Across the Universe, Thirteen), former WCW wrestler and commissioner Ernest “The Cat” Miller (who will also appear as boxer Earnie Shavers in the Bruce Lee TV series that I mentioned here), ECW Original The Blue Meanie, Two-time NWA-TNA World Heavyweight Champion and recent WWE re-hire Ron “The Truth” Killings, Aronofsky crony Ajay Naidu (Office Space, Pi, Requiem For A Dream), and Judah Friedlander (TV’s 30 Rock, Feast). It is set to be released sometime in 2009.
Some trivia:
-Nicolas Cage was slated to play the lead; he even showed up at a Ring of Honor event to do some research for the role. But he backed out at the last minute for yet-unknown reasons.
-Rourke was trained by the WWE Hall of Famer, The Wild Samoan Afa Anoa’i, uncle to superstars Yokozuna, Umaga, and Rikishi.
-Not really a significant piece of trivia, but: Aronofsky is engaged to English actress Rachel Weisz, and I have every intetion of kidnapping him and removing his entire epidermis. Afterwhich, I shall wear his skin around, pretend to be him, and start coming home to RACHEL FRICKIN’ WEISZ. And make babies with her.
