American Gangster 2-Disc DVD: In STEEL CASING, Biznatches!

I come bearing good news today, and it’s about the release of a Limited Edition Two-Disc Steelcase DVD of American Gangster here in the Philippines!

Directed by Ridley Scott, the film, which is based on a true story, stars two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington (Glory, Training Day) as crafty Harlem heroin honcho, Frank Lucas, and Academy Award winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind) as Detective Richie Roberts, a New York City policeman who’s right on Lucas’ tail. The set is expected to be released on March 30, 2008.

If I’m not mistaken, this will only be the fourth Steelcase title offered on these here shores. This also means that distributor Magnavision, which issued one-disc and two-disc Steelcase variants for Michael Bay’s Transformers late last year, has tied with Warner Bros. two-to-two, in terms of local Steelcase releases. Warner has Frank Miller’s 300 and The Departed under its belt. And no, Band of Brothers doesn’t count.

According to this image which I found over at the PinoyDVD forums, you can already start pre-booking a copy of American Gangster at your local video merchant, and that it will set you back at P999, which I think is a reasonable price. I will so kick my memory’s ass if I get this one wrong, but off the top of my head, here’s the summary of the prices of all the local Steelcase releases so far:

The Departed (2 Discs, 2006) - P750

300 (2 Discs, 2007) - P1,250

Transformers (1 Disc, 2007) - P1,250

Transformers (2 Discs, 2007) - P1,500

Out of the above-mentioned, I only own The Departed, and have the limited edition versions of 300 and Transformers, which have an accompanying Spartan helmet replica and an Optimus Prime transforming case, respectively. I just felt like mentioning that because I go to sleep with these DVDs beside me, and I live a sad, sad life.

As for the Special Features for American Gangster, only the ones listed on the flyer are certain as of the moment. The set will carry both the Theatrical and the Extended Versions of the film, with over 18 minutes of additional footage and an alternate ending. A commentary track with director Ridley Scott and writer Steve Zaillian will also be included. Not much is known regarding the features disc, but if it were to mirror its Region 1 counterpart, the following will comprise Disc Two:

Deleted Scenes (including an alternate opening credit sequence)
Fallen Empire: Making American Gangster (Five part series)
Setting Up the Takedown: Be on the set as Ridley Scott directs the climactic drug bust and watch this master director at work
Script Meeting: A look into the production office where director Ridley Scott, writer Steven Zaillian, and detective Richie Roberts discuss the script and break down of the scenes.
Drug Test: Ridley Scott receives information on the preparation of heroin from a New York detective.

The film co-stars Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men, Grindhouse), Cuba Gooding, Jr. (Jerry Maguire, Pearl Harbor), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Inside Man, Dirty Pretty Things), Ruby Dee (who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her work in this film), Carla Gugino (Sin City, Night at the Museum), and rappers Common, T.I., and the Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA.

So there you have it. As I mentioned earlier, you can start pre-booking with your favorite DVD merchants right now. I’ll surely drop by the Festival Mall branch of Astrovision to have my copy reserved, and so should you. The set will also be available online through PinoyDVD.biz.
