List-O-Rama: The Ten Best Music Videos From Movie Soundtracks (Part 1 of 2)
June 20, 2008I know it’s been a while since I updated the site, but I have an excuse: YOUR SISTER! OH SNAP! What?
Anyway, life was getting in the way, and I do apologize for the lack of updates. Stupid life and its lifey ways.
As for this list, please bear with me because it takes a bit of explanation. I am listing down the ten best music videos of songs that are made specifically for movie soundtracks. As if theme songs weren’t obscure enough these days, moreso would be the art of coming up with a kick-ass music video to tie in with and promote your movie.
There are a few gems out there, but we all know how lazy studios can get sometimes. They shoot a video and simply sneak some scenes in from their movie. Some don’t even bother shooting a video, they just conjure a mishmash of sequences and call it a day.
But there is one exception:
#10: The RZA, Young DB and Reverend William Burke “Beat You Down” (from The Protector)
Again, it doesn’t really count as a legitimate music video if every frame was ripped entirely from a movie. Unless of course said movie involves Tony Jaa, some elephants, gunshots, fire, explosions, broken bones, flying kicks, helicopters, AND DID I MENTION ELEPHANTS?!
The song being from The RZA doesn’t hurt either.
Honorable Mention: Warren G. “What’s Love Got To Do With It” (from Supercop). Just wait until the 3:21 mark. Just wait. Watch it here.
#9: Cobra Starship “Snakes On A Plane” (from “Titanic” LOL JK “Snakes On A Plane”)
The limo, the luggage, the boots, and fourteen words that will forever be etched in the annuls of movie history open this epic video, which serves as a mini-prequel to the movie. Gabe Saporta, Travis McCoy, Will Beckett, Maja Ivarsson and her rigoddamndiculously sexy self play accomplices to the crooks who put the snakes on (Where else?) the motherfucking plane. And, there’s a Samuel L. Jackson cameo to boot.
#8: Jamiroquai “Deeper Underground” (from Godzilla)
Nothing unusual from Jamiroquai. I’m just surprised at how expensive this video looks, considering it was the third single released from this soundtrack (after “Heroes” by The Wallflowers and “Come With Me” by Puff Daddy and Jimmy Page).
Honorable Mention: Snow Patrol “Signal Fire” (from Spider-Man 3). Sweet, sweet video. Also set inside a theater, minus the destruction and the giant mutant lizard and such. Watch it here.
#7: Aerosmith “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” (from “Armageddon”)
A possible conversation between the films’ producers in conceptualizing this video:
Producer 1: So who do we have on the movie again?
Producer 2: Bruce Willis and Liv Tyler. And Ben Affleck.
Producer 1: Say, isn’t Liv Tyler Steven Tyler’s daughter?
Producer 2: Yep!
Bruce WIllis: I’m Bruce Willis.
Producer 2: Okay.
Producer 1: We should totally get Steve Tyler to make a video for the movie, and whenever Bruce Willis shows up, let’s replace his head with Steve Tyler’s head.
Producer 2: That would rock so much balls.
Bruce Willis: Matt Damon.
#6: Andrew W.K. “We Want Fun” (from Jackass: The Movie)
Quite possibly the funnest of the fun music video from a movie in all of Fun Music Videos From Movies History. Not only do we have all the Jackass boys, but we’ve also got Butterbean! And ANDREW FRICKIN’ W.K.!
Stay tuned for the conclusion of this series!
