Yahoo! Movies has premierd four new posters from Will Eisner’s The Spirit in glorious sound-o-vision. Click on this link and hover over each photo to hear the characters speak their respective lines.

And because I live in the third world hellhole that is the Philippines, I can’t seem to find a way to embed the flash player here. Anyway, here be the posters

Seth MacFarlane, the creator and primary voice talent of Family Guy and American Dad, has been tapped to replace Kretschmann.

-IGN has an interview up with Eva Mendes, who plays Sand Saref in the big-screen adaptation of Will Eisner’s The Spirit. In the clip, she reveals that she shows her ass in the film.

The Spirit Teaser Finally Online!

April 20, 2008

And I’m pretty sure this is kind of illegal, but what the hell. I credited MTV.com anyway.

Sin City had a vibe which translated impeccably to the screen, and it’s becoming very clear that Frank Miller is going to pattern The Spirit after it.

Honestly, I wasn’t all too familiar and this immensed with the source material until after I found out about a big screen version being made, so I have no qualms. As a general film aficionado and an occasional comic book fan, I really, really, really am excited to see this.

MTV also has some interviews up with Frank Miller and Eva Mendes which you can view by clicking here.

So what do you guys think? Does anyone have any complaints as to the film’s apparent unfaithfulness to Eisner’s work?

MAJOR Spirit Updates; Iron Man Announcement

April 19, 2008

Three hours and counting until the ticker hits zero. Could we finally be treated to some long-awaited footage?

But before we get lost in the hullabaloo as to what the countdown really is for, here are a couple of Spirit-related stuff to satisfy your palate: A new motherflippin’ awesome poster courtesy of AICN, the first official photo of Eva Mendes as Sand Saref courtesy of Yahoo!, and news on a collector’s figure which will be released by DC in December.

Casting Cabana: The Spirit (Mendes, Paulson, Katic)

April 18, 2008

I know, this wasn’t due until tomorrow, but I just couldn’t wait. Anyway, before we move on with the details as to who will be playing Sand Saref, Ellen Dolan, and Morgenstern, I would just like to react to an issue that Ade brought up recently, regarding the film’s look.

Ade asks: Uncle Cockles, why (does the movie look) so Sin City-ish?

Dear Ade,

Thank you for your letter. The full-frontal nude photo which you enclosed was totally unnecessary, and probably illegal. The guy who runs Comicology might find it "useful," though.

Anyway, regarding your query. I suppose we can blame the film’s look on the director being Frank Miller, and Sin City being a great-ish, successful-like, and awesome-y.

However, we haven’t seen any actual footage from the film; for all we know this could all simply be a marketing ploy. The end product could be totally different from how we perceive it now. It could turn our brains into shit with its sheer awesomacity.

But it could also be worse.

Just like babies. They’re really cute most of the time, but when they turn around four or five years old, you just get that natural feeling of wanting to shove them onto incoming traffic.

I hope this answers your question.

Best regards,

Uncle Cinemabuzz Writer Guy

Moving on. We end this series of Casting Caba— HOLY BALLS EVA MENDES IS MAKING PHOTOCOPIES OF HER ASS

Casting Cabana: The Spirit (Johansson, King, Vega)

First of all, I would just like to once again apologize for the sausage attack from a couple of days back. But like I said, I’ll make up for it. I found it best to simply do away with all the dudes, get it over with, and finish off with the ladies.

Over the next couple of days, I shall treat you to an ambush of vagine, “a poonslaught,” if you will (All time low, Cinemabuzz writer guy. All time low.), courtesy of the ladies of The Spirit.

Let’s start with the women whose intentions are to tear our hero a new one – The Villains.

There’s been some confusion as to what Scarlett Johansson’s character’s name really is, but I’m sticking with Silk N. Floss for now. The other name that’s been thrown in the mix is Silken Floss, by the way.

Ms. Floss is the right-hand-woman to The Octopus. She fancies donning various costumes and disguises, like her master, and like me when my parents aren’t around.

Casting Cabana: The Spirit (Sausage Fest)

April 16, 2008

We kick off a series of Casting Cabanas with a shot of testosterone: an all-sausage post featuring the gents of The Spirit.

Denny Colt is a young detective who was presumed dead in the first few pages in the premiere story of Will Eisner’s weeklies in 1940. With his newfound anonymity, Colt re-christens himself The Spirit, a masked vigilante who rids crime in the streets of Central City.

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/6001/thespiritsa2.jpg

The Spirit will be played by Gabriel Macht, who is probably best known for starring alongside John Travolta and Scarlett Johansson in 2004’s A Love Song For Bobby Long.

Macht steadily landed supporting roles in old-and-young-Hollywood-tandem actioners such as Behind Enemy Lines (with Gene Hackman and Owen Wilson), The Recruit (with Al Pacino and Colin Farrell), and Bad Company (with Anthony Hopkins and Chris Rock) earlier in the decade, and this film definitely comes as his biggest break. After all, taking a first glance at the guy, one would likely surmise: “(Scoffs) Poor man’s Josh Lucas.”

Spirit Billboards In Los Angeles

April 14, 2008

IESB and Filmschoolrejects received these two photos of billboards for The Spirit, which have started popping up all over Los Angeles.

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/7681/billboard2bm1.jpg

I get how The Dark Knight started to employ internet-centric, viral marketing campaigns a year before the film’s release, but for Lionsgate (the studio behind The Spirit) to actually erect costly billboards eight months before its theatrical debut boggles the mind. It gets the people’s attention, sure, but will it pay off in the end?

I suppose we’ll find out when The Spirit premieres in January.

Brand New Spirit Stills!

April 11, 2008

Screw the last post, because hot off the presses, we’ve got the first two official stills from Will Eisner’s The Spirit, courtesy of Lionsgate and IGN.

Samuel L. Jackson as The Octopus

We will be pausing from our Spirit reportage this Sunday for the Weekly Roundup, then we will be back to our Spiriting ways all week next week, culminating in a post containing the possibly crappy and bootlegged copy of the film’s teaser which will be screened at The New York Comic Con on April 19th.

It has also been reported that the teaser will make its theatrical debut on May 2nd, together with Iron Man. We’ll keep you posted on that one.

Cinemabuzz Exclusive: Less Crappy Wallpapers of Will Eisner’s The Spirit!

This has been the only known copy of a fairly hi-res photo from Will Eisner’s The Spirit that’s been floating around. Like I mentioned during the last Weekly Roundup, these three "puzzle posters," when combined, form a mega poster giving us a first, not-so-good-look at Denny Colt, a.k.a. The Spirit.

At first I tried to adjust the image and getting rid of the gap, the text, and the watermarks below, and they were actually pretty good. The source files were already pixelated so I tried cleaning those up, especially with the tie. I just didn’t know how to make it more crimson.

But it turned out to be a waste of time, seeing as I could simply print-screen the film’s home page and do a little resizing and background-filling magic. So without further ado, here be photos of Will Eisner’s The Spirit, for your wallpapering pleasure:

Watch this space all week, as I intend on giving you a bi-daily dose of The Spirit, and gonorrhea. And this will all hopefully culminate with the release of the film’s teaser, or with whatever the countdown on the upper right side of your screen is for.
